A big hole that we could fill
We’re not digging our own grave, it’s already dug
Several fellow Medium writers and contributors, including the formidable Sherry McGuinn, have brought it to my attention that doomy essays are a great gimmick for getting hand claps and inflating your following.
I don’t need the money. I have a modest pension and a nice tent. But I would like to run up my numbers, just to see if it can be done.
So, here goes:
I get it.
We have made a mess planet Earth, and the Earth is not happy about it. It’s trying to clean house, wipe us out, by sending waves of contagion, typhoons and tornadoes, wildfires, military madmen and alienated gunmen at us. And still we reproduce exponentially, making existence worse no only for ourselves but for creatures that have never drilled for oil, poured a stretch of asphalt, or tossed a Styrofoam cup in the bushes.
Earth needs our help. We need to do the right thing. Get out of the way. Give the planet back to the bears and the bees and the worms and the Galapagos tortoises. We all need to end it all.
How? you ask.
