Beautiful, honest essay. My experience is that this is an issue of class as well. I grew up in a blue-collar, lower-middle class family with friends mostly from like backgrounds. I got degrees and moved up socially and economically, as my parents hoped. Now virtually all my closest friends, white and Black, are similarly educated and culturally omnivorous.
