For what it's worth, it has long been Associated Press and newspaper policy, whether we're talking the NYT or the Laurel (Miss) Leader-Call, to use the title "Dr." only for medical doctors. Academics are just credited with "PhD" after their names, but only if it's relevant to the topic at hand.
