Good column, as always, but let's not kid ourselves that we were so much more civil in the past. In 1856, pro-slavery Congressman Preston Brooks of SC beat Massachusetts Sen. Charles Sumner, an abolitionist, senseless with his cane. Nearly killed him. The tensions in Congress -- and the nation at large -- have been worse.
