I grew up in Mississippi, next door to Louisiana, which people associate with gumbo, zydeco, jazz and “Laissez les bons temps rouler." A drive into the outer parishes, however, reveals a state as depressed as any in the South and with the added onus of a collection of oil refineries and toxic waste ponds that you wouldn't wish on our worst foreign enemies.
