I have believed from the outset that we-- the US and the NATO allies -- are allowing Ukraine to take this "punch" for us, to serve as both a sacrificial lamb and a fighting proxy. That said, the possibility that Putin would use nuclear weapons if militarily confronted is real -- and even more horrifying than what has happened in Mariupol.
