I could do a whole ’nother Pop Stand composed solely of songs that invoke the word “sweet,” but I’ll save it for later.

Today’s playlist is all desserts and sugary snacks, a collection inspired by my accidentally running across a blurb about a George Harrison song, “Savoy Truffle,” from the Beatles’ “white” album. I always thought it was a screed about excess wealth and that old “material world.” Turns out it was about his pal Eric Clapton’s chocolate habit and both guitarists’ concern about rotting their teeth?

These are the dessert tunes I came up with from memory. Please add to the list if you are so inclined.

Blueberry Pie — Bette Midler

Chocolate Cake — Crowded House

Jellyroll Gumdrop — Ruben and the Jets (Frank Zappa)

Sweet Potato Pie — Ray Charles

Savoy Truffle — The Beatles

Sugar Shack — Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs

Cherry Pie — Marvin & Johnny

Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie — Jay & the Techniques

Hokey Pokey — Richard and Linda Thompson

Sweets for My Sweet — The Drifters

Popsicles and Icicles — The Murmaids

Moon Pie — Hank Williams

Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries — Judy Garland

A Rose and a Baby Ruth — George Hamilton IV
