What a strange essay. I've been reading movie reviews since I was 9 or 10 and later wrote such essays professionally. I have a hard time recalling a single critique by a professional reviewer who judged a movie on the basis of box office success. That said, you are correct that anyone can criticize a movie (or TV show or album). Which means you can negate the opinion of any pro as long as you do the same for the amateur.
