What an honest, courageous essay. Literacy is not at all a white thing. An outsized share of the greatest writers that America has produced are men and women of color. I am who/what I am today because my white, working-class parents in Mississippi didn't just encourage me and my brother to read, they expected it. And they were just as happy when we was reading James Baldwin and Richard Wright as when we were reading Eudora Welty or Faulkner. Your advice applies to every parent.
